A couple of roofers are here today. In my usual mid-morning state of dishelvelment, I stumbled, squinting, out the back porch to say hello.
"Whaddya, work nights?" says the fat old roofer.
"N-no," I begin to stammer. "This is just how I look."

I look like that, too, but I usually have a parrot on my shoulder. I guess I should greet workmen with, "Harrrr!"

I like that it was an "fat old roofer" who asked you that. I'm guessing he wasn't exactly decked out in an Armani suit with every hair in place either.

No, he wasn't, Rueben. Quite the contrary. When I told him to let me know if they needed anything, he said, "How about some hot broads and a bottle of tequilla?"

This reminds me of my favorite greeting card I ever received. There's a woman on the front and it says, "I had a nightmare the other night that there is no such thing as PMS and I'm just this way."
View from the opposite sex, of course, but the fear is still the same. Is this as good as we get?

"hot broads and a bottle of tequila"
If this is the usual compensation for roofers, I'm clearly in the wrong profession.

No, Greg, it was $1,000 PLUS the broads and the booze. You're definitely in the wrong profession.
