Question of the week . . .

What irritates you about the Web?

We all surf the Internet, right? We surf it for business, for fun, for pleasure, for information . . . for all kinds of reasons.

So . . . what irritates you the most about the Internet? What do certain Web sites do that really bug the holy living hell out of you? I'm going to compile a report, titled: '100 Things That Irritate Web Users More Than Anything Else,' and would love to include your input. (That is a working title, obviously, because upon reading it again just now, I realize that it really sucks).

But let me hear from you. What bugs you the most about the Internet? Tiny type? Horizontal scrolls? Inconsistent navigation? Overblown flash?

And . . . if you have any examples that we can use, that would be even better!

Shari Spiewak:

Cheesey sites that were built for probably $19.95, complete with bad grammar and misspellings.

Stephanie Dodge:

Ads within an article on an online newspaper. There is nothing that bothers me more than trying to read an article and all you see is a flashy ad placed right beside the article. I immediately lose interest in the article because I can't concentrate.

Gretchen Williamson:

When your question is not on the FAQ page and you can't find your answer anywhere on the site

Regina Kennamer:

Pop up ads, pop under ads, pop over ads, ads that you can't get rid of, ads that make noise or play music.

Dead links - I cna tolerate pop-ups, flash and assorted design flaws, but dead links drive me nuts.

Ads that follow you as you scroll down the page are incredibly annoying...do these people really think I'm going to want to buy anything from them when their marketing tactics are so obnoxious?

Boy, these are all right on the money. I'll make sure to post the others as they come in, too. Thanks!

Frames. They look stupid, they're harder to use, you can't bookmark the appropriate page, they break navigation and screw up printing. I think that's enough, don't you :)

Buried contact info. I hate it when I have to search to find out where a company is located or how to reach them.

sites that don't get to the point (or are loosely informative).

I hate trying to search for something and either ending up with sites that list search results on their pages (or display "This domain is for sale")... or sites that you can't get the information out quick enough amongst all the highly product orientated information

This shares the same point as "Sarah Montezon", as a surfer I want to find the information I need quickly and not have to delve deep into reading a large amount of non informative rubbish.

The opposite of the above (Things I like finding on the internet are articles, blog entries on a specific topic (like this :)) and sites where I need to find out how to do something and come away saying "I got exactly what I wanted out of that"
