Les is right: Life is beautiful

I really don’t read a lot of blogs. I sometimes don’t even read this one, and I write it.

But every once in a while, I’ll go on a blinge—a blogging binge. And I’ll read quite a few of them.

So it was today that I ended up on Les Potter’s blog, More with Les.

As anyone who reads this blog regularly knows, Les is one of my favorite people in the entire communications industry—and by far one of the smartest. Even though he yelled at me recently out here for making fun of NASCAR fans, I still love the man. And I probably respect him as much as anyone else in the communications industry—even though he’s a NASCAR fan. Just kidding, Les. Not really. No, I am. Seriously.

Anyway . . . Les posted a brilliant blog item today, and I felt the need to post a link to it. I normally don’t link to too many blogs because, as I mentioned earlier, I don’t read that many blogs. It's hard to link to something you haven't read. But if you’re in communication, you’ll want to check out Les’ one-act play on crisis communication. It had me laughing out loud.

But keep reading once you get past first item on the blog. There is another item that he titled, “Life is Beautiful. It Really Is,” that is one of the best blog entries—or, for that matter, any kind of writing—that I’ve seen in a long time.

I love you Les, you NASCAR-loving Southern gentleman, you.

I'm off to Las Vegas tomorrow for the Ragan conference on Social Media. Look for some interesting posts from Sin City!

Kelly:

Hmmmmmmmm - did you know there is a big NASCAR race in Vegas this weekend? I think you did. And I think you secretly planned your entire seminar schedule around it. I think you're a closet NASCAR lover and you can't wait to pull your 5th wheel up to RV Hill at the race track (there really is such a thing - check out the site map for the race on the NASCAR website) and watch really loud, fast cars go around and around and around.

The only reason I know about the NASCAR race is my husband's company is sponsoring a teambuilding exercise in Las Vegas this weekend and attendance at the NASCAR race is mandatory. My husband is not amused and has vowed to get stinking drunk in protest before throwing up on the company president.

Viva Las Vegas!

Laura too:

I confess to occasionally watching a NASCAR race, though I don't really follow the sport. I cannot imagine, Steve, how you could possibly object to a sport where the main job of the spectator is to sit around and drink beer.

Hi Steve,

See ya in sunny Las Vegas!

Kelly

Amy Maggart:

I'll be in Sin City, too! Hoping to learn some new communications tricks and to win some at the poker tables. Yahoo!

Steve, thank you for your kindness. I appreciate your thoughts on this. The post you referred to was a moving moment for me, and I thank you for sharing its deeper meaning with me. I love you, my brother. Les

Will Daniel:

While trying to come up with a good reason why NASCAR is a dumb sport, I came up with these others as well.

Golf: Grown men getting drunk and walking around in silly costumes hitting a little ball with a metal stick.

Football: Grown men beating the snot out of each other while other grown men get drunk and watch.

NASCAR: Grown men getting drunk while watching cars drive around in circles.

Basketball: Grown men running up and down the court in their shorts bouncing a round ball and beating the snot out of their fans in the seats.

Soccer: Grown men kicking a black and white round ball and occasionally an opposing player’s testicles.

Hockey: See football – same thing.

Baseball: Grown men falling asleep waiting for something to happen.

Women’s professional basketball: Huh? Nobody watches that crap.

Will

Was this post about NASCAR?

Head over to Les's Blog folks. Steve's right - it's a great read.
