Three Recommended Articles from a Trio of MVPs

Solutions Architect MVP Beth Massi has posted an extremely useful VB sample illustrating how to speed up binary serialization of datasets in .NET 2.0. She describes her sample as follows:

"This extends the MSDN KB article 829740 (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;829740), which uses a surrogate object to quiclky serialize datasets as binary. This sample incorporates the new ADO.NET 2.0 DateTimeMode property setting on DateTime DataColumns so that date serialization can be controlled for each individual column. This surrogate class produces a smaller binary serialization package than the native dataset binary serialization."

Subsequently, in response to some user questions, she explained that "I should clarify that using the Surrogate class is faster when you have a long wire (i.e. Internet, WAN) and smaller DataSet sizes (i.e. generally less than a couple thousand rows depending on row size). Otherwise the native Binary serialization is faster. For more information please see http://bethmassi.blogspot.com/2006/01/binary-serialization-of-datasets-in.html." Thanks, Beth!

Paste As VB

In the February 2006 issue of MSDN Magazine, Scott Swigart discusses the his "Paste As Visual Basic" add-in for Visual Studio 2005 that converts C# to VB. As Scott explains, it's really an interface to existing Web-based code converters (Kamal Patel's C# to Visual Basic code converter Web service at ConvertCSharp2VB, and Carlos Aguilar Mares's AJAX-powered code converter at CodeTranslator), but Scott's integrating solution provides and elegant form-based interface and also shows you how to create add-ins. Very cool.

Q&A With MVP Wei-Meng Lee

About a week ago, after noticing how many excellent articles Wei-Meng had contributed both to VBD and VS.NET Developer - all of which are available to VSD subscribers - I realized I wanted to get to know Wei-Meng better and sent him a list of questions, asking if he'd be willing to answer them. Here they are:

KW: Do you remember the very first program you wrote? What language was it in, and what computer did you use?

Wei-Meng: I wrote my first functional program when I was preparing for one of my “A”-Level exams [roughly the equivalent of AP exams in the U.S. -kw]. To satisfy the computing project, I wrote a program that allowed two people to play Go [a popular game -kw] on the computer. Back then, DOS still ruled the PC world and Windows was still in its infancy. I used Turbo Pascal [remember Philippe Kahn's low-cost brainchild? -kw] and created a GUI interface that supported pull-down menu interfaces. I still remember the UI aspect of the program - it was such as big deal at the time, and I spent a lot of time implementing the pull-down menu. Much of what is taken for granted today had to be implemented manually back then. I used an XT (8086) with a CGA monitor and didn't even have a hard disk – just two floppy disk drives. Hard to imagine for today’s kids, but those who went through that era will know that kind of feelings.

KW: How old are you and is your name Wei Meng Lee or Wei-Meng Lee? Are you married? Do you have any children or pets?

Wei-Meng: I'm 33, and, as far as my name goes, either one is fine. I used the “-“ to indicate that Wei-Meng is my first name and Lee is my last name (family name). Chinese often spell their family name first, but in order not to confuse readers from the West, I decided that it is more helpful to spell my family name last. I'm single, and as my work is taking up most of my time, I foresee I will remain status quo for the next two years.

KW: What languages do you speak?

Wei-Meng: I'm fluent in both English and Mandarin, and speak my dialect (Teochew, in case you or your readers are curious) at home. Singapore is a multiracial society, so most people here can speak a few different languages as well as dialects.

KW: What was your first PDA? How many do you have around home and the office and which ones are your current favorites? Do you remember the first program you ever wrote for a Pocket PC?

Wei-Meng: My first PDA was the Compaq iPaq 3630. I've "retired" a few others and currently use the i-Mate JasJar –a Windows Mobile 5.0 Pocket PC Phone. I can’t remember my first Pocket PC program, but the first really functional one was written using the .NET Compact Framework.

KW: You're one of those rare developers who seem to be equally conversant with Windows and MacOS. Did you start out your programming career on PCs or Apple/Macs?

Wei-Meng: Actually I started my career as a Mac programmer. That was during the Mac OS 7/8 era, and I was programming in C using CodeWarrior’s tool. It was tough go back then, but the experience really helped me to understand more about programming and gave me a chance to dive deep using the C language.

KW: Where did you go to college/university and what was your degree in? If you could go back to university today -perhaps on a sabbatical - what kinds of courses would you take?

Wei-Meng: I went to a local university in Singapore – National University of Singapore (NUS). I graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Information Systems, but I've always been interested in psychology, so if I ever had the opportunity to go back to school, I'd probably pursue that interest. I'm always fascinated by how the human brain learns. And so this will be very useful to me as an author and trainer.

KW: What newspapers do you read daily and what are your favorite computer magazines?

We-Meng: I usually read CNN from the Web and subscribe to a few news feeds such as Google News. I read a number of computer magazines, such as MSDN Magazine, PC Magazine, Wired, CoDe Magazine. I was a faithful Byte reader, but it's no longer in print. I really enjoy Wired for its innovative content.

KW: When you have free time, what kinds of things do you like to do? Outdoors activities? Watch TV or movies? Listen to music?

Wei-Meng: When I have the free time, I usually spend time with my family and girlfriend. We like to go to the beach during the weekend to relax after a long week of work. I like military movies (such as "Black Hawk Down") and am a huge fan of military aircraft! I like to collect documentaries on aircraft and watch them when I'm stressed out and need some relaxation.

KW: What's your next book going to be about?

Wei-Meng: Oh….you'll know soon!

KW: When you "see" a computer program in your mind's eye, do you see a sort of flowchart, or do you see key snippets of code?

Wei-Meng: I see a flow chart first. I think of it as a series of steps to solve a problem. As long as I can get the series of steps correct, it will naturally be easy to translate it into code.

KW: Thanks, Wei-Meng!

Good Reads

I think Jay Nathan's 9/05 MSDN Magazine article on how you can use fuzzy lookups and groupings for data cleansing is worth the read.
http://msdn.microsoft.com/msdnmag/issues/05/09/SQLServer2005/default.aspx

Similarly, the fifth issue of Microsoft Architect Journal's online publication has a half dozen good articles. I especially liked the one on topic maps.
* Metropolis and SOA Governance, Part 1: Towards the Agile Metropolis
* An Introduction to Topic Maps
* Value-Driven Architecture: Linking Product Strategy with Architecture
* Process and Criteria for Evaluating Services-Based Integration Technologies
* Service-Oriented, Distributed, High-Performance Computing
