Don't go changing, Leon Lott.
Sheriff Lott, the over zealous lawman in South Carolina, who threatened to arrest Michael Phelps for smoking pot, recently gave a speech to his local Rotary Club about the Phelps incident.
I'm not sure this guy isn't smoking something. The speech is funny, until he gets serious—or tries to get serious—to deliver a message about the dangers of drug use while wearing a ridiculous curly-blond wig. Then, because he ignores this weird contradiction, the speech gets extra funny.
Here it is, compliments of South Carolina newspaper The State (via Gawker).

Lott could be way more clever than you give him credit. Suppose he never really wanted to get Phelps....he just saw an opportunity to get his message out to a national audience. Must admit the story sure has legs.
Lott said he talked to only one local reporter--but even with that his message was delivered loud and clear; using drugs is wrong, even if you are an 'American Hero.' [In Phelps case ESPECIALLY if you are an America Hero.]
Yes he looked silly, but his approach was much more effective than the "say no to drugs" speech.

Nice post, Cameo.
Michael Phelps is perhaps the greatest swimmer of all time, but he is not above the law.
Let's not insult Sheriff Lott for doing his job, or even for his dramatic performance. Without his wearing that wig, are you going to post his speech for the po-dunk rotary club?

Leon Lott is a speaker who knows how to get and keep his audience's attention. Michael Phelps made a stupid mistake. Anyone who attends a pot party runs the risk of getting caught. And anyone who lives in front of cameras will almost always get caught. It is unfortunate that his fame led to so much publicity for Michael and undeserved criticism of the sheriff.

I agree the wig should have been removed. BUT, I don't agree that it makes the speech extra funny. I looked past his appearance and listened to his words. I whole-heartedly agree with everything he said.
How was I to tell my nine-year-old son about this incident (after puffing up the previous heroics of Michael Phelps swimming accomplishments) without talking about "when you break the law, you pay the consequences?"
Good for this sheriff for standing up for his beliefs and for not taking himself too seriously - and good for him that his community (at least the Rotary Club) backs him up.

Clay,
Ouch.
I deserved that.
Thanks for catching the error.

The wig was indeed ridiculous.
Of course, your comments would have more credibility if you had identified the sheriff correctly. Leon Lett is an NFL player. Leon Lott is a South Carolina sheriff.
Lay off the "pot shots" until you pass the first test of journalism (and PR) - spelling a person's name right!
