Gay Talese on drinking in The New York Times newsroom

Saw this in today’s MediaBistro morning newsfeed. It’s Gay Talese talking to Big Think about The New York Times newsroom of the 1960s. "Mad Men" was nothing compared to how journalists drank and smoked on the job in the ‘60s, Talese said.

Some things haven't changed. There are still inner circles and still not everyone is welcome. Just new types of inner circles and different types are not welcome. Namely, conservative thinkers are barred from most news rooms these days. Side with the unions and the special interests and you make it into the "old girls and boys clubs" of today.

So he's addressing whether creativity is connected to alcohol abuse. Creativity is connected to angst, which is connected to alcohol and drugs because heaven forbid any of these great writers seek therapy. Anyway, I, too, remember tales of the inner circle. Typically, women were not part of that inner circle, so I didn't miss much.

Hi,
Thanks for this video. It stranged to me that why he is doing some weird stuff like this in newsroom. Some discipline lesson should be thought for him.

I'm not that old but old enough to remember when we had to hand deliver urgent news right into the newsrooms. No security at the back door. Just walk right in and hang out in the news room. Lots of people who didn't even work for the paper would drop by and hang out with reporters and the gang. Politicians, cops, even some "entrepreneurial" restauranteurs and self-describe professional sportsmen. A smoke-filled, locker room atmosphere. Lots of activity and action. Then the party went to a nearby pub after hours. Not everyone was welcome, so if you could break into the inner circle, you could get more into the paper than Twitter, email, BusinessWire combined.
