Hollywood defends — ahem — health insurance execs

If you haven't seen this video yet, take 2 minutes and 20 seconds from your day and watch it. The video features Will Ferrell, Jon Hamm, Olivia Wilde, Thomas Lennon and other actors in an important PSA about America's growing need to protect health insurance executives.

"As the health care debate heats up, we need to remember who the real victims are ... health insurance executives. People are saying a lot of mean things about health insurance companies and their executives, and it's got to stop."

A relative of mine works at one of the nation's big insurers. Wonder what he thinks of this ...

Will Ferrell criticizing someone else for being overpaid?

It's true that "comedy is hard." Irony, however, abounds.

MaryanneJ:

I cannot believe that professionals who deal in public relations and supposedly provide factual information to the public (if indeed that is what Shawn, TJ and anonymous are) are so ready to believe the worst of health care reform.

"Government doctors", "bureaucrats deciding biopsies", "socialized medicine", "rationing", and "death panels" are nothing but BS buzzwords. Aren't PR professionals supposed to be a bit more worldly-wise and savvy than to fall for that?

I live in Canada, where we have had universal health care for some 45 years. The real difference between the Canadian and US systems is that when I take my kid to the doctor (this afternoon, as it happens), I will not have to pay a dime, there will be no waiting to see if the treatment is "covered" by an insurer, the doctor will have one form to fill out on patient care and he will get paid promptly for his services, as will the radiologist, by one reliable health insurer, my provincial government, which has the backing of and is overseen by the federal government.

Oh, and my kid won't get cut off health care later because of "pre-existing condition."

Bruce Pilgrim:

The United States ranks somewhere around 37th place in the quality of its healthcare system. We are #1 in terms of the amount of money spent, however. Whoo-Hoo!

And,God forbid the government compete with private companies. Look no further than the way the US Postal Service drove FedX and UPS out of business.

It is a moral disgrace that this country which I dearly love does not provide health insurance for all of its citizens.

Here's a partial list of countries that do provide universal health care: Cambodia, Japan, India, Germany, Poland, Australia... Do you mean to say that the United States can't -- or shouldn't -- do the same?

Smokescreens about socialism and illegal aliens and death panels are nothing but scare tactics designed to protect the profits of health insurers.

Anonymous:

The producers, creators and writers are MoveOn.org. It's on their site and explains the deception. George Soros, anyone?

TJ:

This is very deceptive. 80 percent is out of thin air and ignores the massive public outrage that made town meetings so emotional. Real independent surveys have revealed that the majority of Americans are happy with their health insurance and more importantly the quality of their care. The numbers of uninsured are odd, too. Proponents of government healthcare (president included) said it was 45 million in mid-summer. In his speech to congress, the prez lowered the number to 30-something million. And of that, many are illegal aliens or those with access to insurance but choose not to obtain it through their employers, wishing to pocket the extra money for spending purposes.

The Big Lie here is that when the government gets involved, "competition improves." The marketplace already has competition. Common sense says the government will suck all the competition out of the marketplace and put the government in control by underecutting the real market prices. Government can beat the market because it prints money. This is all about socialized medicine.

Communications-wise, they are demonizing insurance comapny CEOs to advance their agenda. How many CEOs are there? 20-30? Are we really to believe they are the root of all evil? Actors do.

Question is, do you think Will Ferrell will go to the government doctors in five years if he needs a heart procedure?

Shawn:

Since when do 80 percent of American's support the public option? The poll must have been taken by ACORN. President Obama's administration has correctly calculated it can't take on doctors and hospitals, so they have chosen to target the insurance companies as the bad guys. The mocking sarcasm of this spot puts liberal elitism on full display. I'm sure they think it is intelligent and humorous, but it lacks intellectual honesty and I found the patronizing tone offensive.

Anonymous:

Watching this is like watchin snakes attack snakes. Health insurance companies have been cruel to many, to be sure. But they are regulated by the government to a degree so there are checks and balances. So this group recommends putting all trust in the government. Right. No checks and balances and an even more apathetic, unaccountable, and incompetent party to control your healthcare. I seriously doubt these millionaires will trust some minimum wage bureaucrat to decide whether they need a biopsy or MRI to detect possible cancer. This only proves that comedians can be funny and stupid.
