Obama to highlight PR firm in State of the Union address

Indianapolis-based PR pro Trevor Yager plans to attend President Obama’s State of the Union address Wednesday night.

Did he land a plane in a river?

No — well, not that I know of. Instead, Yager’s PR and advertising agency, TrendyMinds, has experienced 200 percent growth and given back to the community. The president plans to highlight the agency for these accomplishments.

In 2009, the 15-year-old TrendyMinds doubled its employees, gained 15 new accounts, and underwent a renovation to accommodate the massive growth. And, according to its Web site, the company is still hiring (an account coordinator).

In terms of philanthropy, TrendyMinds, which is a certified gay-owned business by the National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce, awarded $50,000 of in-kind work to eight non-profits last year. For 2010, the agency plans to give away $150,000 of work to 12 nonprofits.

“We feel so fortunate to be in such a fantastic position,” Vicki Bohlsen, principal at TrendyMinds, said. “We’re thrilled the president has recognized our success and, in doing so, recognizes the value of public relations. Our industry isn’t going anywhere.”

Hey Edward,

I wrote a follow up post today. I'm going to interview Trevor Yager tomorrow and be sure to ask what happened.

Mr. Obama played to his base last night and paid lip service to the majority of the country, most of whom are really upset over his lack of support for small business, the middle class and firms with non-union work forces, and the many insurance companies, banks, etc. that he vilifies as our 401(k) valuations drop. They lose value because the companies he hates and constantly threatens to run out of business comprise most of our retirement investments. If he wants to create jobs, he needs to quit attacking the private sector from every angle and allow private industry to recover without government interference. Profits are necessary for recovery. Those who seek profits are not greedy or evil. Those who want to be compensated for results are not “fat cats.” They are managers, leaders and entrepreneurs. Some are risk-taking visionaries, innovators and business owners. And yes, like Nancy Pelosi, some fly in their own jets, which are made and serviced by “working families.”

As for Trevor and his firm. I am truly happy for him and the firm's growth. To achieve his growth, he had to achieve profits. Does that make him a “fat cat” like those bankers who try to make a profit on Wall Street? He is a successful small business owner, and God knows, we need so many more like him. He's paying taxes and creating jobs. But once again, by only focusing on a gay-owned business, the president is consistent in reminding us that the only people in society who count to him are those who form his solid progressive base.

What the president demonstrated last night is that he is inflexible to the point where he has now doubled down on many items the majority of Americans reject. With majorities in Senate and the House and so many failures in his first year, this seemingly intelligent Ivy Leaguer has proven only that he is ineffectual as a national leader, and he is stubborn and has a tin ear when it comes to the people.

Hello: Unless I missed it, the President did not mention TrendyMinds or public relations last night. And, I made this a big part of my blog post yesterday. Do you know what happened?
