Do not ask an English teacher a stupid question before she's had her coffee.
On Sunday morning, Lynne Rosenthal, a college English professor from Manhattan, visited a Starbucks and asked for a "toasted multigrain bagel." The barista asked, "Do you want butter or cheese?" Rosenthal became enraged, reports the New York Post.
"I just wanted a multigrain bagel," Rosenthal told the Post. "I refused to say 'without butter or cheese.' When you go to Burger King, you don't have to list the six things you don't want."Linguistically, it's stupid, and I'm a stickler for correct English."
Police officers arrived at the Starbucks to subdue Rosenthal, according to the the Post. She claims she was tossed from the store, but Starbucks refutes that claim.
This is why I have my coffee before I leave the house.

Clearly, Rosenthal was out of line, rude, overbearing and probably exhibited barbaric tendencies; however, I would think that the easiest way to resolve the matter without further disruption would have been to hand over the bagel as ordered. Butter and cheese could have been set on the side for the taking, whether used or not.
I think what may not have been said in this story is the reaction of the barista. I think he or she probably over-reacted and it became a personal issue. When dealing with the public, it is never a personal issue.

I'm unclear on why this is a linguistics issue. The bagels at Starbucks come with free butter and cheese. Technically, just ordering the bagel with no further instructions would imply that she also wanted the free condiments.
Her BK analogy doesn't hold up. If you went to BK and ordered a whopper but didn't want ketchup (a free condiment, like the butter and cheese), you have to specify "no ketchup." Otherwise, you end up with ketchup on your hamburger.

Indeed. The Post story notes (near the end) that Rosenthal called the barista an "asshole." When you're hurling expletives at a stranger in the name of language then, yeah, you probably have some other issues.
